Fitted furniture: How to make your alcoves work for you

Making the most of alcoves

Adding fitted cupboards and shelves to alcoves can be a great use of space; they provide fantastic storage, the opportunity for displaying finishing touches and even work spaces. It’s important to think about the functionality and the design: what you need and what you need from the space.

Add a little light

Light features on your shelves enhance your displays and create ambience within the room. Be playful with this: coloured lighting; uplighters; downlighter; LED lighting.

Highlight with white

Match white painted cupboards and shelves with your skirting boards and architraves against a darker wall colour. This is a fantastic technique to highlight your display and lighten up the room.

Painting your shelving in a bold colour creates a statement feature. Sometimes it can be a little daunting to add colour to your walls, this is a great way to ease yourself in!

Wallpaper patterns

To add some pizazz to your fitted cupboard space, choose a bold print wallpaper. Patterns behind the shelving add depth and make for a playful twist. This works particularly well in display and work spaces as plenty of the wallpaper is visible.

Fitted work spaces are super efficient use of space: you have a place to work and also have the opportunity to incorporate lots of extra storage. Win, win!

If you love having a quiet reading corner, snuggling up or are in need of extra seating then this could be an ideal solution for you. You can utilise the bench as storage and even add a few shelves or pictures. Dress with a padded seat, cushions and a throw for a super cosy result.
